University of Michigan Regent
Andrea Fischer Newman
Andrea Fischer Newman
Andrea "Andi" Fischer Newman is a current University of Michigan regent who is running for a fourth eight-year term. She is a retired senior vice president for government affairs at Delta Air Lines. Fischer Newman and Andrew Richner – both incumbents – are the two University of Michigan regent candidates nominated by the Michigan Republican Party at its August convention. They are among the eight candidates for two seats on the Board of Regents.
Fischer Newman was elected to her first eight-year term as UM regent in 1994. She was subsequently re-elected in 2002 and 2010. During her tenure she has served as chair and vice chair.
This year, Newman was the only regent to vote against raising tuition for UM students. In 2017, she and her husband, Frank Newman, donated $1 million to UM's Department of Theater and Drama.
In 2017 she was appointed by President Donald Trump to the Federal Service Impasses Panel, for a term expiring in January 2022. The group resolves labor disputes when bargaining stalls between a federal agency and a union representing federal workers after mediation.
Fischer Newman began working for Northwest Airlines – later acquired by Delta – in 1995. Before that she was a senior partner at the Detroit law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock, and Stone.
She served as deputy assistant to Vice President George H.W. Bush during President Ronald Reagan's administration.
Fischer Newman has an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the George Washington University National Law Center.
Fischer Newman is married to Frank Newman, retired CEO of The Stow Company. They own a condo at 101 North Main in downtown Ann Arbor.
Mary Lukens of Ann Arbor is serving as Fischer Newman's campaign treasurer.
