OUTCOME: Republicans Tom McMillin and Nikki Snyder were elected to the Michigan State Board of Education in this statewide race. (In Washtenaw County, Democrats Ish Amhed and John Austin received a majority of votes.) For more results, check the Washtenaw County elections site.

Ismael "Ish" Ahmed is the former director of the Michigan Department of Human Services, serving in that role from September 2007 until Jan. 3, 2011 in Gov. Jennifer Granholm's administration. He was nominated as a candidate for the state Board of Education at the Michigan Democratic Party convention on Aug. 27, 2016.

Ahmed is currently is senior advisor to the University of Michigan-Dearborn Chancellor, working on university issues related to metropolitan impact. He briefly served as an Eastern Michigan University trustee (from January-August 2007) and ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the University of Michigan board of regents in 2002.

In the early 1970s, Ahmed co-founded the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) and later served as its executive director for almost 25 years. He is co-chair of the national advisory board for the Arab American National Museum, an organization that he co-founded, and is a board member for the nonprofit Reading Works

Ahmed received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1975. He lives in Dearborn and is married to Margaret Ahmed-King, an educator with the Dearborn public schools. They have five adult children.
