John Austin 

OUTCOME: Republicans Tom McMillin and Nikki Snyder were elected to the Michigan State Board of Education in this statewide race. (In Washtenaw County, Democrats Ish Amhed and John Austin received a majority of votes.) For more results, check the Washtenaw County elections site.

John Austin is director of the Michigan Economic Center at the Prima Civitas Foundation. He currently serves on the state Board of Education and is seeking his third eight-year term. He was nominated as a candidate for the Board of Education at the Michigan Democratic Party convention on Aug. 27, 2016.

Austin is a non-resident Senior Fellow with the Brookings Institution and a lecturer at the University of Michigan. He previously was executive director of the New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan, and served as policy director for the Lieutenant Governor's Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth. 

In his work on the state Board of Education, where he serves as president, Austin has been an advocate for policies that would protect the rights of transgender students.

Austin received a master’s in public administration from Harvard's Kennedy School of
Government, and a bachelor’s from Swarthmore College in economics & political science.
He is married to Terese Austin. The couple has three children and live in Ann Arbor.
