Lana Theis, a Republican from Brighton Township in Livingston County, represents District 42 in the Michigan House of Representatives. She is running for the District 22 Senate seat that’s currently held by Republican Joe Hune, who is term-limited. In the Aug. 7 Republican primary, Theis faces Joseph Marinaro. The winner will compete against Democrat Adam Dreher in the Nov. 6 general election.

Theis was first elected to the Michigan House in 2014, and was re-elected to that seat in 2016. Her candidacy was backed by Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political advocacy group founded by Charles and David Koch.

In the Michigan House, Theis serves as chair of the Insurance Committee and vice chair of the Judiciary Committee. She has sponsored or co-sponsored legislation on a range of issues, including bills to make English the official language of Michigan; to require schools to permanently expel students who are convicted of criminal sexual conduct against another student in the district; to reform Michigan's no-fault auto insurance; and to allow Michigan residents to carry concealed weapons without obtaining permits or receiving training.

From 2008-2014, she served as Brighton Township treasurer. Other public offices she’s held include chair of the Brighton Area Fire Authority and member of the Brighton Township Planning Commission.

In 2012, Theis was a key supporter of a voter referendum drive that would have mandated a two-thirds vote in the state Legislature for any tax increase. That effort failed.

Theis earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from California State University, Fullerton. She is married to Sam Theis, a tax attorney, CPA and founder of Cornerstone Associates. The couple has two children.

Sam Theis is serving as her campaign treasurer.
