Larry Deitch

OUTCOME: Republican Ron Weiser and Democrat Denise Ilitch were elected to the UM Board of Regents in a statewide race. (In Washtenaw County, Ilitch and Democrat Larry Deitch received the majority of votes.) For more results, check the Washtenaw County elections site.

Larry Deitch is an attorney with Bodman PLC, focused on corporate law, real estate law, and government relations. He was nominated as a candidate to the University of Michigan board of regents at the state Democratic Party convention on Aug. 27, 2016. He is seeking his fourth term as UM regent.

Deitch is chair of Bodman's Automotive Industry Team, and authored the ballot proposal that was enacted into law as the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act, which authorized casino gaming in the City of Detroit. He is a director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and a member of the National Advisory Board of the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Previously he was vice chair of the Michigan Civil Service Commission; treasurer of the Michigan Democratic Party; as vice chair of the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Welfare Reform; and a member of the National Advisory Council to the United States Small Business Administration.

His legal work at times intersects with the Ann Arbor community. For example, he represented developers of a proposed hotel called The Glen, to be located at the vacant site on Glen Avenue between Catherine and Ann. (The project hasn't moved forward.)

During his tenure as regent, Deitch has been part of three presidential search efforts, when the board hired Lee Bollinger in 1996, Mary Sue Coleman in 2002, and Mark Schlissel in 2014.

Deitch received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1969 and a law degree, also from UM, in 1972. He lives in Bloomfield Hills and is married to attorney Penny Deitch. The couple has three adult children.
