Candidate:
University of Michigan Regent

Ron Weiser
Republican

Ron Weiser

OUTCOME: Republican Ron Weiser and Democrat Denise Ilitch were elected to the UM Board of Regents in a statewide race. (In Washtenaw County, Ilitch and Democrat Larry Deitch received the majority of votes.) For more results, check the Washtenaw County elections site.

Ronald Weiser is the founder of McKinley, a national real estate management company based in Ann Arbor. He was nominated as a candidate for the University of Michigan board of regents at the state GOP convention on Aug. 27, 2016. This is his second bid for UM regent. In 2014, he ran unsuccessfully for one of two open positions on the board, coming in third in a nine-way race.

Weiser is a major fundraiser for the Republican Party and is one of four regional chairs of the Trump Victory Fund, raising money for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Weiser has led several other national and statewide fundraising campaigns for Republican candidates. He was national co-chair for John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2007-2008, and served as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party from February 2009 through 2010. He served as U.S. ambassador to Slovakia from 2001 to 2005 under the administration of President George W. Bush.

Weiser is a major donor and fundraiser for the University of Michigan, and is a graduate of the UM Ross School of Business. Over the years he has donated nearly $100 million to UM, prompting the board of regents to name Weiser Hall in his honor in 2014. He has served on several nonprofit boards, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Henry Ford Museum, the Michigan Theater, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.

Weiser lives in Barton Hills. He is married to Eileen Weiser, who serves on the Michigan State Board of Education. They have a teenage son and two adult children.
