Who's Running for City Council?

In Ann Arbor, the Aug. 8, 2017 ballot includes only one race: The Democratic primary for Ann Arbor City Council. Scroll down for info on candidates in each ward.  Each of Ann Arbor's five wards is represented with two seats on an 11-member city council, which includes the mayor. This year, one of the two seats in each ward is up for election. It's also a transition year, as the city council moves from two-year terms to four-year terms. (Voters approved the change in November 2016. Click here for details.)

City council members who are elected in 2017 will serve a three-year term, at a salary of $16,073 annually. The council's main jobs are managing the budget, and hiring and direct oversight of two city staff positions: city administrator and city attorney.

In Ann Arbor, there are competitive races in four of the city’s five wards – but not in Ward 2. (Click to see map of city wards.) Voters in Ward 2 won’t be going to the polls because the Democratic candidate, Jared Hoffert, is unopposed in the primary. He’ll likely face incumbent Jane Lumm, an independent, in the Nov. 7 general election.
