Who's Running for City Council?

UPDATE: The following Ann Arbor City Council candidates were elected on Nov. 7, 2017: Anne Bannister (Ward 1), Jane Lumm (Ward 2), Zach Ackerman (Ward 3), Jack Eaton (Ward 4) and Chip Smith (Ward 5). Click here for full results on the Washtenaw County Elections Division website.

In Ann Arbor, the Nov. 7, 2017 ballot includes the races for Ann Arbor City Council, as well as two ballot proposals. Scroll down for info on candidates in each ward.  Each of Ann Arbor's five wards is represented with two seats on an 11-member city council, which includes the mayor. This year, one of the two seats in each ward is up for election. It's also a transition year, as the city council moves from two-year terms to four-year terms. (Voters approved the change in November 2016. Click here for details.)

City council members who are elected in 2017 will serve a three-year term, at a salary of $16,073 annually. The council's main jobs are managing the budget, and hiring and direct oversight of two city staff positions: city administrator and city attorney.

In Ann Arbor, there are competitive races in three of the city’s five wards – but not in Wards 1 and 3. (Click to see map of city wards.) Winners of the Aug. 8 Democratic primary in those two wards – Anne Bannister in Ward 1 and Zach Ackerman in Ward 3 – are unopposed on Nov. 7.
